A Pleasant Surprise

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

When my son first started school, I will admit that I was not looking forward to the many fundraisers that I knew we were going to be expected to donate so much money and time into. I was, however, pleasantly surprised that the fundraisers all seemed to be pretty good ones.

My favorite one was the Christmas raffle tickets. The prizes were great and the tickets were cheap. I actually won a free iPhone from this raffle and I was so surprised because I never win anything. I was actually looking forward to fundraisers after this, even if it did mean that I was going to have to offer some parental involvement.

The school actually did some really neat things, like building a haunted house and having a city-wide Easter egg hunt. We all had a good time and the school was able to make enough money to build a new playground.

Enjoying the new Vinyl Windows

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Ever since we purchased vinyl replacement windows for our home, things have been much better.  You see, we used to have windows that were older than me that used to leak air.  Needless to say, both the cold, rain, and bugs made it into our home, and quite frankly, it was a disaster.

We were so busy that we didn’t have time to get replacement windows and install them ourselves, so we did nothing about it for a long time.  It wasn’t until there was a flyer in the mail from an Illinois window company, that we made the choice to finally get them done.

Really, we should have done it sooner, but now, we are enjoying the spring without many bugs in the house.  I can’t wait until winter to see how much we will save on our heating bill, but until then, I think that we will enjoy our new windows - especially the view, looking over the lake, through clean windows.

Double Whammy

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Ever tried to go through a doorway the same time as an Australian Kelpie? If so, beware.

A friend has one, a reddish-brown-coated beauty who has blossomed since moving to the country. When they first got her as a one-year-old, she had been so neglected, she didn’t even know her name. Now her vocabulary consists of her name and her “brother’s,” plus “sit, gently, out, come, stick, eat, water, walk, biscuit,  ride, puppies in, puppies out,” and several more.

Her instincts for herding, however, were not impaired by the earlier neglect. She “herded me” through a doorway, hitting my injured knee to move me out of her way.

When I flew to Anaheim for a seminar the next day, I had to do an Internet search for hip and knee pain in Orange County.. By the time I found someone nearby, my seminar was over. After many trips to the chiropractor and several hundred dollars later, I’ve learned my lesson. I let the Kelpie go through first.

Planning a Night on the Town

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Ever since we have had children, it seems that it requires a lot of effort for my wife and I to get out of the house.  We need to get a babysitter, and plan a short night out - but it is worth it.  Every parent needs a break, and so do we, so even though it is a lot of work, we make the effort to get out of the house whenever we can.

I have decided that tonight I would take my wife out for a night on the town.  I reserved a Philadelphia limo, as well as booked us a table at a classy restaurant.  She has been working very long hours at work, and I thought that the night out on the town would just make her day.

There are still a couple of hours before she gets home from work, and I hope that she will be as excited as I am to go out on a date - for us, it has been a long time.

Life Wouldn’t be the Same without Golf Shirts

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

I must admit that I am a bit weird.  You see, unlike most people that wear suits to work, I like to take a little more leisure approach.  Perhaps it is due to my years working in a warehouse discount store where we were expected to wear more casual wear, or it could just be that I have my own business so I can decide what I can wear.  But, whatever the "real" reason is, I love to wear golf shirts.

In fact, my wife looked through my closet the other day, and she remarked that I didn’t even own one shirt that wasn’t a gold shirt.  If you ask me, why would I bother owning clothing that I just wouldn’t normally wear?  It would be a waste of space.

So, there you have it, I am a golf shirt kind of guy.  I know that my life wouldn’t be the same without them.

A Surprise for Our Anniversary

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

While daydreaming today, I thought about our last wedding anniversary and how perfect it was.  You see, I actually remembered it for a change (trust me, you never want to forget your wedding anniversary if you want to stay out of trouble), and I had bought my wife a present weeks earlier.

The gift was nothing fancy, just a new outfit that she would just love.  She always complains that she never has enough clothing, so I thought I would get her a little something.  I had also booked us a room at a hotel and supper at an expensive restaurant.

But those things were not the most memorable part of the entire evening, rather opening my gift is what I remember most.  It was in a box, and I opened it up to find sexy lingerie and stockings.  I looked at her and she said:

"Do you want me to try it on?"

What a great anniversary.

A Treat in the Mail

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Now, I will be the first to say that I don’t really look forward to getting the mail out of the mailbox every day.  The reason being is that all that is usually in there is just bills and junk mail.  First off, I don’t want the junk mail, and secondly, who really wants bills?

Not me.  But, I have to check the mail anyway, because if I don’t the kids on the block will steal it - which could be bad.  Anyway, I went out today to check the mail, expecting the usual junk, but when I looked in the mailbox, there was something different.

It was a box.

I took it inside and made sure it was addressed to me - and it was.  So, I decided to open it, and it turns out that there were a number of worldwide travel guides inside.  I guess our travel agent felt that it was time for us to go on a trip and included them for our reading pleasure.

That is fine by me - at least I will have something to do this afternoon.

Making a Compromise

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

I have been nagging my wife for a long time that I need a new motorcycle.  You see, my old one spews out some nasty exhaust and is on its’ last legs and needs to be replaced.  I have even found a new bike that I want and have showed it to her.

But, she is not happy with the price - she thinks it is too much.  Her argument is that we could buy a car with the same amount of money that I want to invest in the bike, and I guess I can see her point.  For me though, I see it as a reward for all the hard work that I do - so I asked her what she thought would be reasonable.

After a short pause she told me to look at some used motorcycles and I could pick one of them.  Her argument was that they were more affordable for us, and she would be happy to let me have a used one.

Well that is definitely better than not getting one at all - I guess I will have to see if I can find one I like.

Her Last Resort

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

My best friend is one of the most amazing people in the world.  Whenever I am around her, we have so much fun.  In fact, if I wasn’t married, I would definitely consider dating her - she is the most special woman in my life.

But she has had horrible luck with men.  I mean, every one of her boyfriends use her and then dump her.  I just don’t really understand how someone so amazing can have such bad luck when it comes to relationships, but that is just the way it works out for her.  It makes me very sad that she faces the prospect of being alone for the rest of her life.

I suggested that she sign up for a few dating services online to see if she could find love there.  She wasn’t too keen on joining and felt like it should be her last resort, but she was going to humor me.

Though it is too early to tell if she will find true love online, but it is worth a shot.
